The succession of governors and other prison managers is usually routine. They are moved as part of a career/promotion plan, but from time-to-time an appointment is unsuccessful. The appointment of a governor unable to meet the expectations of members of staff led to a breakdown in relations and a failure to ensure that the prison was staffed over a holiday. After prison officers withdrew their support and goodwill the governor was transferred. This was an example of what has been called 'forced removal'. From the point of view of the person most affected it is a form of status degradation.
