Abstract:
Ecological change is not a pure natural course, but embedded in the social
structure and social change. Take a village in the area of a reservoir in Northwest
China as my field, this article analyze the change of relationship of state
and rural society and its influence to the local ecological change.
From the building of the reservoir, the village in question sees an ecological
depravation for many years. However, the local peasants cannot wage any public
protest until the fall of the People’s commune system. Since the beginning of
1980’s, the village gradually possesses increasing degree of autonomy. From
three aspects—the village possession of land, the rose of new village elites
and the resurgence of the traditional culture, I argue that the rebuilding of
the village community have a favorable influence to the local ecology.
Key words: ecological change village community village autonomy
