Abstract:
This paper focuses on the strategies of how the CCP committee of Xiyang County
sustained the superiority of Dazhai, a brilliant model in building socialist
agriculture in Maoist China, to illustrate the mechanism of how advance models
could be preserved.
The main proposition is that, the members in this committee as an interest group
played a crucial role in promoting Dazhai¡¯s advanced status, which contributed
a lot to the long-term maintenance of the mass movement to learn from Dazhai.
Based on briefly introducing the process of this movement, this paper primarily
aims at two objectives. Firstly, it describes why and how the interest group
as mentioned above was constituted; secondly, it attempts to account for the
way that the group performed its function, which consisted of two means.
On the one hand, following the enormous and successive political movements at
that time, the group produced and modified the advanced meanings of Dazhai model
by various means, with the imaginary names such as ¡°warm leftover rice¡± ¡±knead
dough¡± and so on. On the other hand, under the slogan of ¡°establishing the Dazhai-type
county,¡± the group managed to expand Dazhai¡¯s experiences to every brigade in
Xiyang county, and thus realized the reproduction of Dazhai model and enlarged
its extension to a county level.
In conclusion, this paper discusses the related institutional questions about
the mode of setting up examples, and points out that the research on this subject
is of considerable theoretical and practical significances.
